Nearly 15 years ago, I had my first lunch in London at the Gaucho near Piccadilly Circus, and I have considered it a great spot for a steak ever since. However, I had not tried their burger and so when I so when I spotted them offering a cheeseburger DIY kit, I felt I had to try. The Bun: 14/20 A pretty good brioche style bun that came individually wrapped, but unsliced. They were a tad on the hard side, and the instructions suggested an optional toasting that did little to soften the bun at all. Flavour was good, but…
When I first starting working in London a little over a decade ago, I mentioned to a colleague that I was yet to find a great cheeseburger in the UK and he took me to a nearby Byron that very day and changed my mind. When I saw they had a special burger on for the Euros, I made arrangements to pop into the city for some meetings last week and take on “the Dribble”. Read on to see how it was… The Bun: 16/20 Byron has always had a good bun, the sort of brioche that has become a…
TGI Fridays did a number on us with 63rd & 1st. I have not been a fan of TGI Fridays since a random Friday evening trying to wipe BBQ sauce from a pretty decent rack of ribs and watching a chair fly past my line of sight forcing me to poke myself in the eye with a rib. Oh how the memories come flooding back. I swore I would never again walk into an establishment that seemed more geared toward fuelling the clubbers with Del’ Boy looking Cocktails than the quality of the ambience or food. 63rd & 1st immediately…
A birthday celebration meant that I was treated to a Poor Boy’s by a friend. Having been to Poor Boy’s a few times and never been disappointed I was excited to do a special review on one of their fantastic Po Boy’s. The only consideration I had about the delivery of the Po Boy was how it would travel on a delivery. Read on to find out how it went… The Bun: 18/20 Shiny, soft and perfect size to stack in a mound of components the Cochon Po Boy came harnessed by a brilliant brioche. For me, the bun at…
A few month’s ago we tried the Ed’s Easy Diner Smokey Joe DIY kit and it was a decent cheeseburger but we were left a little hungry. We noticed they are now putting out a Cheese and Bacon version so thought we would give it a try. The Bun: 15/20 A pretty good brioche style bun that taste just like they look. They came in paper bags and I was concerned they had dried out a little as they felt stodgy to the touch, but once we cooked fried in butter they really softened. We thought these were a tad…
We tried the Shackburger DIY a few months ago and absolutely loved it. The only knock was that we were still a little hungry after one cheeseburger each. That led to weeks of debate about whether single patties or doubles are better, and what is the right amount of beef for the perfect cheeseburger. So we thought we could experiment a little and ordered two sets of the ShackBurger DIY with the idea of turning those singles into doubles. But that would leave an extra bun for each, but we realised quickly that we could use half of those…
One of the meals I have missed most during the pandemic is a Friday lunch trip to MeatLiquor for a Dead Hippy burger, and maybe even one of their famous grogs if the afternoon isn’t too busy. So, I have been watching their DIY offerings closely to see if I could get one during lockdown but so far the closest they have come is their beef chilli cheese dog. I know from experience their hot dogs are pretty good so definitely had to try, even if not quite a cheeseburger. Read on to find out how it was… The…
Dirty Bones are a cool joint, cannot take that away from them. Having been to their restaurant in Carnaby Street in London I can recall a pretty great burger with a fun, busy, night-life style atmosphere. Personally I have overlooked their classic burger as a DIY kit because I have just been more inclined to the crazy topping style kits on sale. I have to admit that I wasn’t extremely excited about this DIY, a little simple….. but The Bun: 17/20 Dirty Bones have a seeded brioche bun in this DIY kit. I have to admit that when I felt…
Deliveroo has been a source of many a burger image and some we have taken note of previously, namely Spielburger and Black Bear when we saw these images. The Flintgate was a similar situation. Although, not technically, a burger restaurant the images just kept crying out for a taste with some pretty brilliant reviews and “The Big Smoke” looking like a likely candidate for a review. It was inevitable that it would be a random Monday evening sitting on the sofa, sifting through Cheeseburgerme’s Instagram. The Bun: 8/20 There are a few things we look for in a decent bun…
