I first got to try Shake Shack about 10 years ago in Dubai, but it was a work stint in Hong Kong where I became a big fan. The KY Style concrete (their term for an extra thick shake) is a mix of frozen custard, waffle, peanut butter, banana and maple sauce. Best breakfast ever! Anyways, with Covid keeping me from enjoying it in person, I was pretty excited to order their DIY kit. It did not disappoint, read on to find out why I liked it… The Bun: 18/20 This is my new gold standard for how a bun…

While strictly not a cheeseburger, the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich is a delicious cousin. After all, both have chopped up meat that is fried, covered in cheese and served on a bun. However, it is a much rarer cousin. While Britain has embraced burger culture over the last decade, and is now embracing proper BBQ, the cheesesteak has proved elusive. So, when the opportunity to try out Passyunk Avenue’s DIY kit arose, we jumped at it, and are very glad we did! Read on to see why we liked them so much… The Bun: 18/20 The hoagie rolls come partially…

Having Cheeky Burger local in a ‘pop up’ meant I had to take the opportunity pre lockdown number 3 to go and grab a couple of their signatures. I opted for the Elvis and the Hot Daddy. How did they fair in the Cheeseburgerme breakdown of components? Check it out! The Bun: 19/20 Cannot fault this bun in the slightest. Soft, tasty brioche with a nice little shine was ever inviting. I think they must have steamed this bun because it just seemed to be like absolute heaven biting through and it just blending with the other components like butter.…

Libertine has been a burger joint I have had my eyes on for a number of weeks after seeing some fantastic images on Instagram. Their products have looked pretty amazing with sizzling bacon and beautifully coloured cheese amongst unbelievable hacks by DIY chefs. This was the ultimate weekend “cheat” by my calculation and I looked forward to it all week from the minute my order was confirmed for delivery on Friday. The Bun: 11/20 Have to admit the buns looked reminiscent of my favourite Burger and Beyond buns when I saw them in the packaging on arrival. Sesame seed brioche…

We have seen a few Christmas burgers added to menus in recent years, but haven’t had a chance to try many this year due to Covid restrictions. So when one of your favourite burger chains adds one to their DIY selection, it becomes a must-try. Honest Burger were brave with this one. The Bun: 17/20 Honest Burger has a really good bun, a simple and elegant brioche, no need for weird seeds on top. It is a lovely golden brown and the flavour/texture are excellent. They always seem to have the size right and they come pre-cut. The instructions say…

I miss Ed’s Easy Diner since they closed down their London shops. When my kids were little and not the ravenous teenagers they are now it was a place we’d stop after walking around London. My son loved the hot dogs, I liked the burgers and we all liked the shakes and ambience. So when I saw they were offering DIY kits that delivered to my area I was excited to try. The Bun: 14/20 A good bun. Incredibly soft on top, yet firm inside. Nothing too exciting taste wise, and perhaps just a little too big for the…

Admittedly it has been a few years since I have been inside a TGIF, but there was a time they set the standard for what has become a more common restaurant format. Thanks to tier 4 restrictions, we ended up not hosting a small Christmas dinner we had planned so had a lot of food to eat ourselves, but I am glad to report that none of it went to waste, although a lot of it went to my waist! So as the calendar ticks to 2021 it’s time for that annual attempt to atone for December’s eating sins. This year I thought I would give some veggie/vegan burgers an honest try and where better to start than Honest Burger. Read on to find out how they were. The Bun: 16/20 We…

I loved the name when I first heard it, but Covid has kept me from making a trip to Spielburger to give them a try. So I was pleasantly surprised when a Spielburger option appeared for Deliveroo, although I was less pleased when the night I tried to order that option was gone. But a few days later my wife noticed the option was back and we gave a few of their burgers a try. This is the review for the very tasty 1216. The Bun: 13/20 Good but not spectacular. Lightly toasted, simple bread taste. Held together very well…
