It was a random question that ignited the conversation with Farm Fresh about the “Special” burger they had in store for us in Kingston. Having tried a couple of burgers at Farm Fresh I have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the independent restaurant based in Kingston. The Giant Burger was promised to be something special and well, read on to see how it went.
The Bun: 16/20
Farm Fresh has a really good brioche bun that is light, fluffy but not overly bread-heavy. I liked it last time and nothing has really changed. Getting the right bun composition for different types of burgers must be a grueling job and it did well in the Giant Burger but didn’t hold the entire time. With two heavy patties, a ton of sauce, and meat juice saturating the bread the heel of the bun struggled to stay composed. I have had buns fall apart, however, so although I have taken one point from their previous 17, be assured Farm Fresh still has a good bun.
The Toppings: 10/10
Fresh crispy lettuce, one big tomato (which we will talk about in a second), and Ox Cheek. I am not a fan of tomato in a burger stack, I just find the texture quite off-putting but in this stack, it was nullified by the phenomenal Ox Cheek. The Ox Cheek is cooked on-site and goes through a 12 hour cook period so the meat is just strands of rich beef. The seasoning, although subtle can be tasted through every bite and delivered on complimenting the, already huge patties. I found myself wiping my hands over the takeaway box to scoop any residue of this perfectly cooked meat!
The Condiments: 10/10
The Farm Fresh sauce has a similar taste to a burger sauce but the acidity is softened with their additional herbs and spices. On the last review, I said the Farm Fresh sauce was delicious but unfortunately I didn’t have enough to make a real impact on the burger overall. On the Giant Burger, I had a big whack of the sauce that gave me the full experience of this delightful sauce. I can imagine the balance may have upset the consistency on the heel of the bun as it was layered on top of the heel. Either way, where the burger may have lost a point it certainly gained in this component.
The Cheese: 16/20
The American Cheese at Farm Fresh remained the same today, a good performing cheese. I did find that the cheese was lost in translation somewhat, but with an extremely powerful topping like Ox Cheek and two huge patties, it can be forgiven. A double cheese would have made a difference to the positive on this occasion but, being honest, so much has gone into this burger already it could be overkill. I am no chef and as you will see from the overall taste they have done this right. Scoring highly on each component requires incredible attention to balance – they did a good enough job just balancing the stack haha!
The Patty (s): 18/20
I want to put some perspective on the size of these patties. These are two patties at 160g of beef. If we were to calculate a standard blend of 80/20 beef to fat ratio this would be 812 calories just on the meat itself! I have tried to cook burgers just at home for the kids and it is stressful. Watching the chef in the kitchen was eye-opening, the attention to timing delivered on a perfectly medium double patty burger. The meat is rich and you could taste the quality in what, I would assume, is a well-aged beef. The patties were so good I could have eaten them without the bread. With the ox cheek layered on top, under the cheese, the beef flavour was made even more impressive.
The Taste: 19/20
The taste was incredible. If you are looking for something super beefy with a superb richness then this burger is an absolute no-brainer. This is one of the best-tasting burgers I have tried for a long time. We have also reviewed the Farm Fresh Burger you should check out here
Our Verdict: 89/100
This burger is brilliant, I could eat one of these every day. I loved the beef, the ox cheek was unbelievable and the sauce is impeccable. There are so many burgers to try at Farm Fresh but this Giant Burger was something pretty special. I have left there knowing full well I will be returning to try the rest when I can get round to it. In this particular stack, I think the only thing missing was a little bit of balance. The massive amount of meat is hard to counterbalance and I would have had it no other way, it would have just been nice to taste a little of the nice American Cheese they stock at Farm Fresh.
Ultimately, when a company delivers on fresh produce, handmade sauces, and seasonings, even down to the mustard, you have to appreciate the effort. Effort aside, it is always a delight to head to Farm Fresh and their food is a standout in a competitive Surrey market. You can check out Farm Fresh’s website here
