A trip to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland unveiled a surprise in Truffle Burger having a pop-up. Having tried all 3 of the Truffle DIY kits it was more curiosity that had me looking at the pop-up, wondering whether there would be huge differences between a freshly cooked burger by the company. Truffle Burger has pretty amazing ingredients in the Truffle Mayo, Raclette Cheese, Crispy Onions, Fig Jam and Bacon, and Beef Patty. It was reading the menu, nicely displayed on the front of their stand that sold me, even against the other delicious-looking stands with a global cuisine feel. Read on to see how it went…
The Bun: 18/20
The bun at Truffle was a nice soft brioche that had a slight sweetness to it. The bun was probably helped by the freshness that can sometimes go amiss when you have a pop-up. I imagine it must be hard to maintain a constant temperature of the buns when you are out in the cold, 3 degrees on this day. The bun, despite being soft had to contend with the fig jam and truffle mayo, which could have easily forced the bun to fall apart, but it didn’t. Great job with good taste.
The Toppings: 10/10
The crispy onions at Truffle Burger are phenomenal. They are so, so, so crispy and are the perfect topping to an otherwise, moist stack. The flavour is great, exactly what you would expect from a well battered strong onion. The way that they break up the texture in the stack is a masterclass; each bite you hope to get some more crispy sensation. I thought that throughout eating the burger they would, perhaps soften up a little, but they didn’t at all.
The Condiments: 9/10
It was a friend of mine that reviewed the Truffle Burger for the website and he was a little unsure of the ratio of truffle mayo in the stack. I, in fact, tried the burger at the same time and found that the flavour was extremely strong, but I did enjoy it. I guess with truffle mayo and fig jam, two strong components in the stack you need to know your ratio inside out. I tasted a distinct difference between the DIY and the burger made by the brand itself. The truffle was hinted in the stack with the fig jam taking a more prominent position in taste. The results were a combination of brilliant flavours married by a knowledgeable chef. Shows that I had made mistakes on the DIY but also shows that they know their product because this was a different burger!
The Cheese: 18/20
The raclette cheese was probably one of my highlights in this stack. It was melted pretty well and had the signature nutty rich flavour you would expect from raclette cheese. I did find that the flavour was a little softened by the strength of the fig jam and truffle mayo which was, no doubt, what Truffle was trying to achieve in the first place. We have reviewed Truffle a few times but this one scored so well on the Hit List!
The Patty: 16/20
Truffle has created a bacon and beef blended patty which yields good results. The taste is what you would expect from smoked bacon in a burger stack but without the texture you would expect. I could taste a pretty strong smoke that was pleasing to the taste but it was not overwhelming in the slightest. The Americans say “Bacon makes everything better” and I cannot help but agree the patty was certainly enhanced in flavour by the bacon. Although the taste was good I did think that the patty was slightly overcooked for my liking, stealing away a little of the juiciness. Would have been nice to have the patty a little more rare, perhaps it could have sneaked another point or two in this category.
The Taste: 18/20
Unsurprisingly the Truffle Burger overall taste was really, really good. The bacon and beef blend, complimented by two brilliant condiments, a great bun and perfectly crisp onions smashed this burger out of the park. If you are looking for a meal at Winter Wonderland that has fresh ingredients and a brilliant taste look no further than Truffle’s stand.
Our Verdict: 90/100
The difference between Truffle Burger cooking and a DIY Kit is night and day. The flavours that were so prominent in the DIY became subtle delights in this burger that enhanced the flavour in all the other components. Winter Wonderland London has a ton of different menus that you could spend your time eating through and I almost did. Having reviewed three Truffle Burger products already it was curiosity that made me choose to try one of the burgers cooked by the brand and I was not disappointed. Truffle Burger is among one of the best burgers in London and I am looking forward to going back again. The Truffle Burger may well be a little powerful for young children but as an adult, you know you are eating something good when you are upset it is finished!
