There is something about ordering a burger on Deliveroo. After trying so many delivery services, I have just found that the final product is sub-par to expectation. Fego, Cobham is a pretty popular restaurant in Cobham, not least because of the Chelsea players attending, but also for documented terrific food. I have had reservations about eating “at” Fego, as the environment is not really my cup of tea, but the menu has always been appealing. A few weeks ago my wife tried the BBQ Short Rib Mac and Cheese and said how good it was and so, I decided that I should try the burger out. I must admit, I did not have high expectations, but tried to remain positive anyway. At a price point of £14.50 for a burger and fries, I thought it was pretty fair. Read on to see how it went…

The Bun: 19/20

I have got no complaints about the bun at all. The soft brioche was a little sweet to the taste and was fresh as you could imagine. The toasting of the bun was near perfection, offering a crisp inner layer that was felt in the textures but not overdone so it became crumbly. Both the heel and the crown held well against an absolute mound of a stack, which really surprised me. Too many times ordering online you find the bun sweats inside the packaging and you are left with a soggy mess that falls apart pretty quickly during eating if it even makes it in one piece to your lips. The packaging at Fego, Cobham must have played a part in the preservation of freshness to the front door, also the speed of delivery from chef to door, which should also be commended. In fact, the only reason I have deducted a point in this category is that the bun missed a little shine, that wow factor that we have had before.

The Toppings: 8/10

This huge burger from Fego, Cobham came with Baby Gem lettuce, Beef Short Rib, Gherkins, and Crispy Onions. The lettuce was fresh, and the gherkins were nice. The gherkins were cut thick in strips and did taste really good but I just thought they interrupted the textural consistency in the burger being cut so thick. I liked the crispy onions but, simply, there were not enough of them. It was the Beef Short Rib that was perhaps the most disappointing. Being such fatty, rich meat, with the right BBQ flavour short rib can really enhance the beefy flavour in a stack. I felt that the meat was cooked pretty well, maybe a little dried, but the flavour was missing a little punch.

The Condiments: 10/10

This Jalapeno Mayonnaise was spectacular. The jalapenos were very hot, which I really liked! The tiny pieces of jalapeno in the mayonnaise made such a huge difference to the sauce, it tasted rich, spicy, and with that familiar mayo smoothness. I would eat this from a jar this sauce!

The Cheese: 15/20

I spent a little while trying to figure exactly what cheese this was as I did read on the menu that Fego, Cobham use Monterey Jack cheese on one of the burgers. I came to the conclusion that it was a simple Cheddar used in the BBQ Beef Short Rib Burger because of the consistency and flavour. After many reviews sometimes you could say that we have been short-changed on the amount of cheese received; this certainly was not the case from Fego. The cheese came fully loaded in this stack and, for Instagram and eyeballs, this was a delight. As flavour goes, the cheese was null and void. I found the cheese bland but I did think the texture that it offered the stack, was pretty brilliant. It was really well melted and must have taken a while because there was a lot!

The Patty: 13/20

A 200g beef patty is a monster and it certainly looked the part when I opened the box from Fego, Cobham. The meat was ok. I found that it didn’t have the gamey richness that my Canadian counterpart really doesn’t like in his burgers and I really do. The disappointment in the patty came from the texture due to the overcooking. I am not one for well-done meat as it is, but this was a step too far. The meat took on a grainy texture being so well-done and I wondered if the melting of the cheese played a factor in the over-cooking of the meat? Either which way, the nucleus of the burger is good and the meat, if cooked for a little less time would certainly score higher.

The Taste: 17/20

Much like Gareth Bale for Wales, this burger had a star of the show and it was the Jalapeno mayonnaise. Combine this mayo with pretty much any piece of meat and you are going to get a good taste! The overall taste of the burger was really good but I felt it lacked balance. The thick-cut gherkins, mayo, over-cooked meat, mounds of cheese, and inconsistently layered short rib meant that each bite had a different type of taste. The weird thing is that although each bite was different from the last, I enjoyed it every time. I would go as far as to say that Fego, Cobham produced my favorite delivery burger to date. It is a bold statement to say that this burger managed to surpass one of my all-time favorites Five Guys, on delivery at least.

Our Verdict: 82/100

Fego, Cobham should consider themselves proud of this burger. I really believe that a few tweaks, and maybe eating in the restaurant and this burger could be one of our Top 10 burgers. I thought that the overall flavour was really well done and overall the burger just missed a little balance due to the components not being layered perfectly and of course, the disappointment on the patty. All being said, it did open my eyes to perhaps trying some different food from Fego because the quality of their ingredients is definitely a plus. A quick mention is the chips! These chunky cut chips were sensational. Triple cooked to a level that, even travelling in a box, could rank as the best chips I have ever eaten – so thank you for those!
